(2)Enrolling in elementary school/junior high school (compulsory education)

Education in Japan is compulsory at the elementary school (for 6 years) and junior high school (for 3 years) levels. When your child reaches school age, be sure to complete the admission process. There are customs, events, and rules that are specific to Japan for school life. It is important for parents to understand them in order to make school life easy for your child and enjoy it.

1.School age

School age is the age at which a child starts school; 6 years of age for elementary school, and 12 years of age for junior high school. A grade in school is determined by the age of a child. As a general rule, children of foreign residents are admitted to the grade corresponding to their age.

2.Cost

[National or public schools]

The enrollment fee, tuition, and textbooks are free for elementary school and junior high school students. However, there are several additional costs including course materials other than textbooks, school supplies, school meals, school trips, and school uniforms. These costs are paid by the families of the children.

[Private schools]

The enrollment fee and tuition are paid by families.

3.Enrollment process

The board of education sends parents a document regarding enrollment by the end of January of the year your child starts school. Contact the School Education Division if one of the following applies to you:

A. You do not receive the document.
B. You enroll your child in a private (national) elementary school /junior high school.
C. You have questions.

4.Transfer (entering a new school) process

If you wish to transfer your child to a public elementary school or a junior high school, file an application at the town hall. After that, your child will be admitted to the designated school on a designated day.
As a rule, children are admitted to a grade corresponding their age. However, depending on their proficiency in Japanese, they can join the lower grade on a temporary basis. If you are concerned, consult with the board of education or a school teacher.

5.School life (if your child is not yet proficient in Japanese)

Classes are given in Japanese. If you are concerned about your child's Japanese proficiency, consult with the school teacher. Japanese lessons and advice on life in japan are available.

6.School life (events)

Various events are held at school. You will be notified of the events in advance. Participating in school events is a good way to get accustomed to living in Japan. Some of the events are as follows:

  • Sports Day: an event to enjoy sports. Families cheer for their children.
  • Field trip: teachers take students on a day trip.
  • School trip: usually, the students in their senior years have a stay-over trip.

7.PTA

PTA (Parent Teacher Association) consists of parents and teachers.
It is an organization in which parents and teachers work together for children.

8.After school care program

After-school child day care is for elementary school pupils whose parents are not at home during the day. A wide variety of activities are offered for them to enjoy after school.

9.After graduating from junior high school

If a student wishes to continue to study after graduating from junior high school, there are many options: continuing to study at a senior high school or specialized vocational high school; enrolling in a special technical school, schools that teach various topics, a vocational school, or working and learning at night classes or taking a correspondence course.

7.PTA

学校には「PTA(Parent-Teacher-Association)」という保護者と先生の会があります。
